Dr. Robert Marx is an Orthopedic Surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery where he is Vice Chair for Faculty Development.  He is Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He received his medical degree from McGill University as well as a Masters of Science in clinical epidemiology at the University of Toronto. He is Vice Chair of Orthopedic Surgery for faculty development at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Marx has an interest in ACL surgery, complex knee ligament reconstruction, and knee replacement. He is the Head Consulting Orthopedic Surgeon for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), The Juilliard School and a Team Physician for the New York Rangers. Additionally, Dr. Marx serves on the Executive Board of Directors of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) and is currently the society’s Newsletter Editor.

Title: Primary ACL reconstruction: from graft choice to return to play

Summary: Rationale for ACL injury Prevention programs and data to support these programs will be reviewed. ACL repair, the bear implant and graft choice will all be discussed.  Indications for lateral extra-articular surgery and results will be discussed. Return to play protocols following ACL surgery will be reviewed.

Jacques Menetrey has studied medicine at the University of Lausanne. He completed his
orthopaedic training at the University Hospital of Geneva and achieved a Sports Medicine
Fellowship and Research Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He wrote
his medical thesis about “Musculoskeletal injuries in professionnal dancing” in 1995, and his
privat docent thesis about “How to Improve muscle healing” in 2004, both successfully
presented at the University of Geneva, Switzerland.

Jacques Menetrey is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University Hospital of Geneva
and acted as the head of the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Unit from 2003 to 2016. He is
currently the Medical Director of the Swiss Olympic Medical Center at Hirslanden Clinique La
Colline in Geneva Switzerland from 2016. His main area of clinical activity is orthopaedic sports
medicine focusing upon knee and muscle surgery, as well as primary knee replacement
surgery. He is also the medical director of the professional ice hockey team GSHC, and has
been the medical director of Alpine Skiing at the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020, Doctor
for the Swiss Alpine Ski Team, former medical director of the Cycling World Pro Team IAM
cycling, of the Geneva Supercross, the Béjart ballet and Geneva ballet. Jacques has been the
head of the Geneva basic and advanced knee arthroscopy course for more than 20 years now.

His research has focused upon regenerative medicine, cell therapy, and tissue engineering
applied to muscle, ligament and cartilage. His clinical research has focused upon meniscal and
ACL injury, as well as muscle injury. Pr Menetrey is also editorial board member and reviewer
of several national and international scientific journals in orthopaedic surgery and sports
medicine, and the editor of the yearly Sports Medicine issue of the Revue Medicale Suisse. He
authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. He
notably co-edited the bestseller: “The Knee Joint: Surgical Techniques and Strategies”.
He is currently the Past-President of ESSKA

SHORT PRESENTATION

Dr Stefan Mogos completed his orthopaedic residency training at the Foisor Orthopaedics Clinical Hospital Bucharest. He is currently a senior orthopaedic surgeon at this hospital and he is a knee surgery specialist.

He is the President of the Romanian Society of Arthroscopy and Sports Trauma since May 2020. From 2014-2018, he was the General Secretary and between 2018-2020 the Vice-President of the Romanian Society of Arthroscopy and Sports Trauma. He was also the Co-Chairman of the Virtual SRATS Congress 2021, Vice-Chairman of the Scientific Committee of SRATS Congress in 2018 and a member of the Scientific Committee of SRATS Congress in 2016. He was a member of the Scientific Committee of ESSKA Congress 2020 and of the Editorial Board of KSSTA Journal.


Dr Mogos’ main clinical activity is in ACL/PCL reconstruction, revision ACL reconstruction, knee dislocation – multiligament knee injuries, meniscal surgery, complex patello-femoral instability and knee degenerative surgery – osteotomies around the knee, knee arthroplasty. He published several papers on these topics and had many presentations in national and international scientific meetings.

Joan C. Monllau is an orthopaedic surgeon of Barcelona, with expertise in the field of knee surgery, including both degenerative and sports medicine. He completed his MD, at University of Barcelona (UB) in 1983, and his PhD, at Autònoma University of Barcelona (UAB) in 1999. He authored over 160 articles in international peer reviewed journals and more than 60 book chapters. He has given more than 250 national and international lectures and is currently mentoring and supervising several PhD projects.

He has been head of the knee unit in Hospital del Mar (2004-09), head of the department of Orthopaedics in Hospital de la Sta Creu i Sant Pau (2009-14) and is currently head of department of Orthopaedics at Hospital del Mar (2015). He has been Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics at the UAB (1997-2008) and Full Professor in the same institution since 2009.
He is an active member in the following societies: the Spanish Arthroscopy Association (AEA), where he was president in the period 2011-13, the Spanish Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SECOT), the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA), in which he is currently vice-president, the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), the Sociedad Latinoamericana de Artroscopia, Rodilla y Deporte (SLARD), the International Meniscus Reconstruction Experts Forum (IMREF) and the ACL Study Group. He is on the editorial board of The Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Surgery and has been working as a reviewer for several journals, including KSSTA, JEO, Int Orthop, The Knee, RECOT, to mention some of them.

He was president of the Barcelona 2016 ESSKA biannual congress, and was selected to be the Godfather for the 2017 ESSKA-SLARD Travelling Fellowship.
He has won some 18 awards from national and international societies and has been elected honorary member of the Chilean Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SCHOT), the French Arthroscopy Society (SFA), the Spanish Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SECOT), and the Portuguese Society of Arthroscopy and Sports Traumatology (SPAT).

Native orthopaedic surgeon and scientist

Prof. Seil is a Luxembourg-native orthopaedic surgeon and scientist. He trained in Luxembourg, Belgium,
Germany and USA. He wrote his doctoral thesis on meniscal repair in 2001 and his professorial thesis on pediatric
anterior cruciate ligament injuries in 2003 and was appointed extraordinary professor in orthopaedic surgery at
the University of Saarland in 2007. Prof. Seil has been working at the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg from
2004 where he currently serves as CMO of the Division of Neurosciences and Musculoskeletal Diseases. His main
areas of interest are orthopaedic sports medicine as well as primary and revision knee arthroplasty.

Prof. Seil is co-director in Luxembourg of the IOC-accredited French-speaking Research Centre for Prevention of
Injury and Protection of Athlete Health Network REFORM. He is co-founder of the Pediatric Anterior Cruciate
Ligament (ACL) registry of the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA)
and member of the scientific board of the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, Bologna, Italy. He received several
awards for his scientific work, co-edited several books, (co-)authored several hundred peer-reviewed
publications and book chapters. Prof. Seil is a founding member of ESSKA’s Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics.
He is senior associate editor of the “British Journal of Sports Medicine – Injury prevention and Health Protection
of the Athlete” (BJSM-IPHP); co-editor of the journals "Arthroskopie" and Sports Orthopaedics and Traumatology
as well as editorial board member and reviewer of several scientific journals in orthopaedic surgery and sports
medicine.

RS is a member of many national and international societies, among which the International Society of
Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) and the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)
study group as well as honorary member of the French Academy of Surgery, the SIGASCOT (Italy) and the SPAT
(Portugal). He is past president of ESSKA, board member of the ESSKA Foundation, president of the Germanspeaking
Society in Orthopaedic and Traumatologic Sports Medicine (GOTS) and the Luxembourg Institute for
Research in Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine and Science (LIROMS). He chairs the medical and scientific
commission of the Luxembourgish Olympic Committee (COSL) and is a board member of the Sports Medicine
Society in Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Institute of High Performance in Sports (LIHPS). He was an ESSKAAOSSM
travelling fellow in 2001 and godfather in 2019. From 2003 until 2005, he was chairman of the ISAKOS
arthroscopy committee.

Prof. Dr. med. Rainer Siebold performed his medical training at the Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg, Germany.

During his medical training he worked in Manhattan/New York and Boston/Massachusetts. In 2003 he performed a 1-year Fellowship in Knee Surgery with John Bartlett, Hayden Morris and Julian Feller in Melbourne, Australia. In 2008 he was chosen for the AOSSM-ESSKA Traveling Fellowship and the AGA-Aircast Pittsburgh Clinical Fellowship.

Since 2008 he works as Orthopaedic Surgeon and Specialist for Knee Reconstruction (ACL, cartilage and meniscus transplantation) and navigated Knee Replacement at the ATOS Hospital in Heidelberg, International Center for Orthopaedic Surgery. He is Professor at the University of Heidelberg for Clinical Anatomy and member of several international societies, e.g. ESSKA, ISAKOS, Australian Knee Society, the ACL Study Group and Honorary Member of the AOSSM. He is General Secretary of the Magellan Society for International Traveling Fellows and published nearly 100 peer-review articles and book chapters.

Richard Villar is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon (Emeritus) with former busy practices in Cambridge and London (UK), and Dubai (UAE). He ran an active Fellowship programme.
He is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hip Preservation Surgery (Oxford University Press), past Editor-in-Chief of The Bone & Joint Journal (formerly JBJS(Br)), the Founding Editor of Bone & Joint360, and an accredited travel journalist.

He is now the Science Editor to the World Health Organization (Eastern Mediterranean) with a focus on trauma created by conflict. He writes for both academic and general readerships, has researched extensively, and has more than 240 peer-reviewed publications to his name.

He has been active in more than 30 countries worldwide and has clinical interests that centre on surgery for the young adult hip, with particular emphasis on impingement, hip instability, and orthobiological therapies for articular cartilage repair. He has amassed one of the largest experiences of hip arthroscopic operations in the world.

Richard Villar was the Founding President of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy, travels and lectures widely, and has undertaken significant conflict and disaster commitments on behalf of several humanitarian organisations. In this latter role he attended the earthquakes in Kashmir, Java, Haiti, the desert conflict in Libya, the response to Typhoon Haiyan (Philippines), the Weapon Traumatology Training Centre in Lebanon, and the Great March of Return in Gaza.
In addition to his orthopaedic publications, Richard Villar has written several books for the public, including Knife Edge: Life as a Special Forces Surgeon, Winged Scalpel: A Surgeon at the Frontline of Disaster, and Never a Straight Line: travels through Chile and Bolivia. His interests include writing, wilderness travel - he is a qualified International Mountain Leader - and classical guitar.

Dr. Wascher attended medical school at St. Louis University followed by an orthopaedic residency at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. He then completed a 2-year fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine at UCLA.  He began practicing orthopaedic surgery at the University of New Mexico in 1991 and has been there ever since. In 2015-16, he undertook a year-long sabbatical in Lyon, France with Prof. Philippe Neyret.  The focus of his medical practice is on knee injuries, and knee arthroplasty.  He is a team physician with the University of New Mexico varsity athletic teams and the former director of the Sports Medicine Division fellowship.  

Dr. Wascher has been an Associate Editor of the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine since 2015.  He also serves on the editorial boards of The American Journal of Sports Medicine and The Journal of Knee Surgery and is a reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and for Clinical Orthopaedics.  He serves on the Board of Directors of ISAKOS as well on as on the Knee Arthroplasty Committee, the Membership Committee, and the Program Committee.  He is active in the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and has previously served as chair of the Traveling Fellowship Committee as well as Instructional Course Chairman.  He was an AOSSM Traveling Fellow to APKASS in 1999. 

He has also served on the Program Committee and the Education Committee for AOSSM.  He writes examination questions and serve as an oral examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.  He is an active member of the AAOS, AOA, AOSSM, and ISAKOS.
