Η Ελληνική Αρθροσκοπική Εταιρεία εκφράζει τη βαθιά της λύπη για τον αδόκητο θάνατο του Kαθηγητού Ορθοπαιδικής και Αθλητικών Κακώσεων του πανεπιστημίου Pittsburgh, των Η.Π.Α. Freddie H. Fu.
Ο Kαθηγητής Fu υπήρξε από τους πρωτοπόρους ερευνητές και χειρουργούς στην Ορθοπαιδική των Αθλητικών Κακώσεων. Οι ιδέες του και οι κλινικές τους εφαρμογές καθοδήγησαν και καθοδηγούν την καθημερινή πράξη όλων των συναδέλφων στο χώρο της Αρθροσκοπικής Χειρουργικής. Ο "Freddie", όπως συνήθιζαν όλοι να τον αποκαλούν, ήταν θερμός φίλος της χώρα μας και της Ελληνικής Αρθροσκοπικής Εταιρείας. Συμμετείχε στο 5ο Συνέδριό μας και θα συμμετείχε ζωντανά ως τιμώμενος ομίλητής στο επικείμενο 9ο Συνέδριο της Ελληνικής Αρθροσκοπικής Εταιρείας τον ερχόμενο Ιούνιο. Πολλοί από τα μέλη και τους φίλους μας είχαν την τύχη να βρεθούν στο UPMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery και στο University of Pittsburgh Athletic Department.

Freddie H. Fu, MD USA

The ISAKOS family is saddened by the loss of renowned orthopaedic surgeon and friend to all, Freddie H. Fu, MD, who was an ISAKOS member since its creation in 1995 and served as ISAKOS President from 2009-2011. A David Silver Professor and Chair of the UPMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and head team physician for the University of Pittsburgh Athletic Department, Fu was a much-beloved mentor and giant in orthopaedic sports medicine. He repaired the knees of thousands of patients and published papers that were cited more than 60,000 times.
Born in Hong Kong, Fu came to the United States to attend Dartmouth University, and in 1975 earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He attended secondary school at St. Paul's College and as a teen played lead guitar in a rock band and participated in basketball and swimming. At Dartmouth, he played on the school's champion ping pong team, served on the Chinese and International student associations, and in 1974 earned an undergraduate degree in biology.
He founded the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's sports medicine program in 1986 and helped design the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex in Pittsburgh's South Side. In 2016, the Pittsburgh City Council declared September 13 as "Dr. Freddie Fu Day." In 2018, the Rooney medical building was renamed as the UPMC Freddie Fu Sports Medicine Center.
In constant pursuit of improving ACL surgery techniques, Fu studied fossils, tracked down models of early hominids and even conducted surgery on a Pittsburgh Zoo mandrill monkey who was experiencing knee pain. The result was his famous "double-bundle" knee repair technique. A study in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine found that Fu had published more of the top-100 cited papers on ACL reconstruction than anyone else in the world.
Known for his stylish and attention-grabbing attire, Fu was known worldwide as a brilliant orthopaedic surgeon and a leader in the field—one who treated high-level athletes and everyday patients equally. Though constantly working and traveling, he always found time for his family and hobbies and passions, such as photography and theater. Fu's wife, Hilda Pang Fu, whom he met at a party in Hong Kong, have been longtime supporters of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, the Pittsburgh Symphony and other organizations. Fu was a vibrant light—always learning, thinking, teaching, and doing something to make life better for his patients, trainees and the community. His impact throughout the world is monumental and he leaves behind a remarkable legacy.
Fu is survived by his wife of 47 years, Hilda Pang Fu; his daughter, Joyce Lok-See Fu (and husband, Chad Martin); son, Gordon Ka-Hong Fu (and wife, Ding Li); five grandchildren: Ludivine Ling-Yun Fu Martin, Alexander Zee-Yun Fu Martin, Axel Wei-Yun Fu Martin, Kendrick Kai Cheng Fu and Kasen Kai Sheng Fu; his mother, Mabel Foo; sisters Susan Lam and Jeanette Maeba; and brothers Frank Fu and Nigel Fu.
His family asks that in lieu of flowers or gifts, memorial contributions be made to theFu Family Legacy Fund, which will support the programs and people of the University of Pittsburgh Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
